Automotive Specialty Tools: Floor Jacks, Jack Stands And Steering Wheel Pullers in Car

While working on your car, you may need to change its tires, check its undercarriage or even remove its steering wheel. These tasks require specialized tools. We have discussed some of the most common ones in this article.

Floor Jack

Floor jacks are hand tools that use hydraulics to lift and lower a car. The horizontal piston of a floor jack pushes on the short end of a bell crank while an elongated arm provides the vertical motion to a lifting pad.

Floor jacks are most often used for tire changes and to check brake systems, exhaust pipes and undercarriages of a car. They are commonly sighted at pit-stops during automobile races.

All floor jacks have a specific carrying capacity, usually between two and twenty tons. Those used for the maintenance of heavy vehicles have wheels so that they can be maneuvered easily when positioned under the vehicles frame. Such floor jacks can also be extended considerably and provide a low profile when collapsed.

Jack Stand

Jack stands are used to hold up the car while you work under it. While they are extremely useful, it is important to place them correctly to ensure work safety.

The process of propping up a car with a jack stand starts with setting the parking brake and gear. Then, the car should be lifted to the desired level using a floor jack. After this, the jack stands should be placed in the correct position under the car. Using the floor jack, the car should be lowered slowly until it comes to rest firmly on the jack stands. To verify that the car is balanced properly, the mechanic may lean on its bumper and shake it. If it wobbles, he needs to reposition it.

Steering Wheel Puller

Steering wheels need not be removed as often as tires need to be changed. But, on the off chance that they do, it is important to use the correct tool for them. This tool is the steering wheel puller.

A steering wheel puller is a cost-effective hand tool that removes the center nut of the steering wheel so that it may be removed easily. To begin, the puller must be placed over the center hub of the steering wheel. The accompanying bolts should be threaded into the holes of the wheel and tightened. The puller holds on to the center hub while tightening the bolts pushes the wheel off the steering column.

As a safety measure, the car battery must be disconnected before starting the steering wheel removal process. To prevent the horn from blaring, its mechanism must be disabled beforehand.

While the above automotive specialty tools are immensely functional for both mechanics and do-it-yourselfers, manuals must be read and instructions followed to avoid accidents while tinkering with the car.

Holiday window painting | Glass Painting in Light

The Halloween pumpkin is an icon of the holiday. When the Fall season starts, pumpkins abound. You simply can’t have a good Halloween party without carved pumpkins. And every home has to have at least one Jack-o-Lantern in its window or porch for Halloween.

So how did this humble fruit, the pumpkin, become associated with the scariest holiday of the year?

The Irish are credited with first having carved roots as the first Jack-o-Lanterns. They began by carving beets and turnips with frightening faces to ward off evil spirits. But they also were used to decorate porches to welcome the spirits of their dead relatives. Lumps of coal, still glowing from the fire, were used to light up the interior of the carved vegetables. The tradition came over to America with the Irish. Many came to America with the Potato Famine in the 1840s. When they arrived, they chose the larger American pumpkin over the tinier carving surfaces of the beet and turnip. Hence, the Jack-o-Lantern became the favorite of the Halloween decor.

Eventually candles replaced the coal as the light for the great pumpkins. And now, carvers have the luxury of flameless votive candles to light their creations. There’s no more worry of burning down the house with an unattended carved pumpkin.

Today crafters have turned pumpkin carving into a high art. There are contests and festivals devoted to the carved pumpkin. And all decorated pumpkins are not even carved anymore. Now, pumpkin decorators can punch patterns into their pumpkins and then light them up for the revealed design. An etching can also be done on the surface that allows a design to be scraped onto the pumpkin without ever breaking through the pumpkin.

Elaborate and complicated patterns are available and people love topping each other with the most outrageous and ornately etched designs. A favorite with moms of school children is the painted pumpkin. Children can’t cut themselves when they’re simply painting their pumpkins.

I am trying to find a diagram of the inner workings of a floor jack for paper. Can anyone help me?. . .?

I know it operates on both hydraulic and screw principles but I need understand how the machines are combined to for the floor jack device. Can anyone help me out here? Thanks.

Chosen Answer:

Are you talking about the floor jack used in automotive applications
or a floor jack for raising floors, also called a bottle jack.

I ask because the floor jack for automotive that I am familiar with has no screw machines in it. It is a steel frame with 4 heavy wheels at the corners and a long lever arm that does the lifting being driven up by a hydraulic cylinder underneath. The source of the lift is a small pressure cylinder at the base of a long rear handle which is pumped up and down to lift. The handle also, using different methods in different brands, controls valves to raise, lock and lower the lifting arm by valving the fluid in the main cylinder.
The bottle jack has a threaded screw inside the main cylinder into which is turned a matching threaded rod with a pad on top. The threaded rod is used to adjust the height before lifting so the hydraulic force is applied without a lot of frantic pumping just for movement. It is not used as a screw machine – that is it is not turned under force to ramp up the rod. The force is applied by a small cylinder on the side being moved with a lever arm. A release valve lowers the piston.

Is it possible to add a car Stereo unit to a home stereo system?

I bought a Mini Sony home stereo unit in 1999 and it doesn’t have much features. Now I want to listen to HD radio, mp3 and Satellite Radio at home. A typical car stereo under 0 basically has all the feature I want.

The question is how to connect a car stereo to my existing home stereo? I know there is a AUX input at the back of my Sony stereo. But the car stereo may not have the input jack….

Chosen Answer:

Not really a good idea. Car stereo stuff runs on DC so you will need either a car battery or a DC power supply to power it. I’d guess you don’t want a car battery sitting on your floor. A decent DC power supply will cost around . However you could do it. I’m aware of the dilemma. I’ve looked for home audio receivers with HD Radio and have come up blank. To do this you need an automotive head unit with a PRE-AMP OUT – not IN – and connect that to the AUX IN of your Sony. To do it right you will need to know how many amps (amperes) the head unit requires and then buy a 12 volt DC power supply with at least that rating (more is better for “headroom”).
Here’s a power supply page from an electronics supplier:
P.S. Thanks Daniel. I may well buy that Radio Shack tuner.
