What do you think of 4-cylinder SUV’s?

Even in times of high gas prices – you have 4-cylinder SUV’s — which don’t really preform too well (personally I think 4 cylinders belong in cars or station wagons)… I was driving my mother’s Rav-4 the other day – sure its Mechanically sound and reliable – but it preforms very BAD in windy conditions — you can’t stay in one lane… its too light and its center of gravity is too high… and its plain cramped uncomfortable to drive…

Now, the Forester – that’s a nice concept – Wagon SUV… and I hear the CRV is good…

I work at a used car dealership so I did get to test drive the forester – I thought it was pretty spiffy… CRV was OK… I liked the interior but it bore much resemblance to the Rav-4 in terms of handling…

Of the three you listed, I and several automotive magazines recommend the Forester. It’s really come a long way since its inception. Of course, the CRV and RAV-4 aren’t bad options either. One 4-cylinder SUV that is often overlooked is the Mazda CX-7. If you don’t like the SUV driving position, it sits lower to the ground and handles much more like a car. However, I’d advise against the Chevrolet Equinox, Ford Escape, Mitsubishi Outlander, and anything from Dodge, Chrysler, or Jeep. I know it sounds biased against domestic manufacturers, but compact, car-based SUVs are not an American forte. These vehicles just lack the quality and driving dynamics of the foreign automobiles. Two nice uplevel choices are the Acura RDX and the brand new Volkswagen Tiguan.

Why are the automotive companies struggling so ineffectively to get better fuel economy ?

60-odd years ago I owned a 1929 Morris Minor sedan that regularly achieved over 40mpg on the larger Imperial gallon … It had an 848cc capacity, sohc, 4 cylinder engine with long stroke, small bore and a rather inefficient-SU pump-type carburettor. Top speed was well above todays’ Freeway limits. Seems to me we need to re-invent the wheel ?

However some of the stuff that undermines things on efficiency go behind the scenes.
Miles per gallon for cars in the mid 1990’s are same as they are now. Yet there have been advances. How?
1. Each year there’s a different hurdle for safety requirements. Many of the requirements add weight. The weight must be stripped off some where or the car must carry more weight.
2. Emissions requirements – must burn cleaner, more stuff has to be added. Weight is added and removed or fuel suffers.
3. Consumers demand (AC, Sound Systems, Beverage holders…on and on) – more drain on power, add weight, sacrifice efficiency.
4. Fuel – There are more additives (back when you and I were putting about, that leaded stuff was rocket fuel compared to the stuff now…Mick….did we even need compression to get an ignition?). Additives sometimes degrade octane. Fuel is less efficient than it was.
For each advancement that is made, and admittedly they seem like baby steps, there’s a regulatory reason or market reason that all but erased the benefit.
